2022-2026: Support for the rehabilitation program for teenagers on the streets by upgrading an artisanal chocolate factory
Project

Location
Pachacamac, Lima, Perou

Current situation
The Instituto Mundo Libre in Lima, Peru is an NGO created in 1985 to provide treatment to abandoned children and adolescents with drug addiction problems. Through multi-disciplinary therapies oriented towards training as well as family and social reintegration, this center aims to rehabilitate adolescents and to get them out of their marginalised life on the street.

It is estimated that 16% of Lima's population of children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17 work and live on the streets, which is equivalent to 314.280 children and adolescents. Often these young people no longer have any ties to their families.

Background (the sale of small chocolates)
In 2015, AMU supported the center with the creation of a mini-chocolate making factory for traditional Peruvian chocolates. The production and sale of chocolates, which now operate at a semi-professional level, have become an essential source of income to cover operating costs and contribute to the self-sufficiency of the therapeutic center.

Activities of the project
Given the scale of production, the institute is required to have a larger area for packaging and dispatching of chocolates. The present project includes the expansion of the "Chocotejas" factory and consists of the construction of 90 m2 of packaging and storage areas, as well as the financing of the equipment and furniture necessary for the operation of these areas. These new areas will ensure temperature control and verify whether all deliveries are in accordance with the parameters of quality and safety of the products, as prescribed by the legislation in force.

Beneficiaries

The capacity of the center is 80 children and adolescents. They are accepted for rehabilitation therapy after having used drugs or having lived on the streets and in areas of extreme poverty. The project indirectly benefits 600 families.
