2022-2026: Development of the compound of the primary school in Lokusero, Kenya
Project

Location
Lokusero, Laikipia County, Keny

Current situation
Lokusero Primary School is the only primary school for the entire Maasai community in Lokusero. The school with its boarding facilities is located on community land of the Maasai, Il-Ngwesi and Tassia, and was built in 1956. In 2010, an initial AMU project to build dormitories and a kitchen was completed. Currently, the school has 360 students and 8 classrooms. The government only helps with the funding of staff and school materials.

In Kenya, less than 50 percent of Maasai girls have the chance to visit a primary school and less than 10 percent reach secondary level.

Background
The majority of the students are Maasai. The Maasai are primarily engaged in extensive cattle herding. In a semi-nomadic lifestyle, they move with their herds over large areas in search of water, grass, etc. Currently, a little more than half of the 360 students attend the boarding school.

Activities of the project

  • Construction of two additional classrooms to reduce the number of students from the current 70+ per class in grades 6 and 7
  • Construction of two housing units for teachers
  • Improvement of the sanitation system

Beneficiaries

The primary beneficiaries of this project are the students and teachers of the primary school in Lokusero and its surrounding villages. The project will directly benefit:

  • 360 students
  • 10 teachers
  • 6 staff members
Indirectly, the project will benefit the approximately 7.000 Laikpaik Maasai who live around Lokusero.

2022-2023: Kenya drought relief project
Project

Location
Region Mukogondo East Ward, Laikipia County, Kenya

Current situation
A multi-seasonal drought is affecting the eastern part of the Horn of Africa, including our partner country Kenya. This drought has been declared the worst natural disaster in 40 years. For the past three years, Kenya has not received any rain for most of the country. Drought-affected populations have experienced consecutive shocks since 2016, including natural hazards, such as drought and flooding, COVID-19, and a locust invasion in 2020.

In 2021, northwest Kenya experienced the driest conditions and highest temperatures since 1981. This has a devastating impact on vegetation, pasture and water resources.

Background
About 4 million people are facing acute food insecurity and are in need of humanitarian assistance. The drought is affecting all 23 counties in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands. Some marginalized communities in these counties have little access to basic services and have lost ownership of most of their ancestral lands.

Activities of the project

  • Provide basic necessities for households living in the vicinity of Lokusero Primary School (food, drinking water and fodder for livestock)
  • Distribute livestock (cows and goats), seeds and fertillizer before the next rainy season
  • School nutrition program
  • School deworming and hygiene program
  • Provide counselling to victims through education and psycho-social support

Beneficiaries

The project aims to reach 2759 people through 50 households and 10 schools in the Mukogondo region.

  • Secondary schools: Chumvi + Arjijo (total: 235 students)
  • Primary schools: Lokusero / Rajijo / Chumvi / Kiwanja Ndege / Olkingei / Lowua / Sanga / Sieku (total: 2204 students)
50 households (2-3 adults and 4 children): 320 people

149'433.00 EUR : Budget allocated to the project
134'489.70 EUR : Contribution of the Luxembourgish Government
14'943.30 EUR : Contribution of Action pour un Monde Uni asbl
